3 R'S TO REDUCE-REUSE-RECYCLE LANDFILL IN MORAY
Moray Waste Busters is a registered charity which was established in 2002 to promote public awareness of the "3 R's" (Reduce-Reuse-Recycle). It has developed into a well-established and popular feature of the local community, promoting awareness of the need for waste minimisation through a range of activities including an environmental education programme for schools (and other interested groups), a reuse/reclaim facility and a training placement scheme for disadvantaged adults from the local community who need help preparing for the world of work.
The message is just as important as we continue to search for ways to reduce the amount of waste which ends up in landfill. The emphasis today is moving more towards minimisation at source, ie: creating fewer waste products in the first place.
In the past we have run several projects to raise public awareness of the 3R's (Reduce-Reuse-Recycle) and other related environmental issues. These have included promotion of home composting, a feasibility study into the production of worm cast and workshops on growing willow, turning old car tyres into decorative garden planters and making craft items from plastic bags and other discarded materials. We have received funding support for these activities from a variety of sources including The Scottish Executive, Communities Scotland, Forward Scotland, SEPA and WRAP.
Our most successful venture to date has been our reuse/reclaim facility where members of the public can donate their unwanted household and garden items, thereby preventing the items from ending up in landfill. This has become a valuable resource for local people who can purchase good-quality items at reasonable prices.
